There are three Departments in Merchant navy
- Deck Department
- Engine Department
- Galley / Catering Department
If you want to join Engine department and become Marine Engineer Officers, then you have to start your career as Junior Engineer or Trainee Marine Engineer. Junior Engineer after experience & promotions become Chief Engineer of a ship over a long period of time.

To Join as Marine engineer you have to do any ONE of the following Courses:
- B.Tech in Marine Engineering Course – 4 years course
- Graduate Marine Engineering Course (GME) course – 1 year course
- Diploma Marine Engineering Course (DME) course – 2 years course
After completion of any of these courses, you will be posted as Junior Engineer on Merchant Navy ship.
To do these courses you should have following Educational Qualifications:
For B.Tech in Marine Engineering Course – 4 years course
- 12th Pass with Physics, Chemistry & Mathematics & minimum 60% marks in PCM.
- Age Maximum 25 years.
- Selection Procedure: First you have to clear Indian Maritime University Common Entrance Test (IMU-CET) which is compulsory.
- Also you should clear Companies’ Sponsorship Exam conducted by Merchant Navy companies so that your job is confirmed before taking admission. This is not compulsory, but you must appear for this.
- You should take admission in an Institute approved by Director General of Shipping of India only.

For Graduate Marine Engineering Course (GME) course – 1 year course
- Graduate in B.E. (Mechanical) Engineering with minimum 50% marks in final year.
- Age Maximum 28 years.
- Selection Procedure: You have to apply to Top Institutes and pass their Entrance Exam. Entrance exam will include Written, psychometric test & Interview.
- Also you should clear Companies’ Sponsorship Exam conducted by Merchant Navy companies so that your job is confirmed before taking admission. This is not compulsory, but you must appear for this.
- You should take admission in an Institute approved by Director General of Shipping of India only.

For Diploma Marine Engineering Course (DME) course – 2 years course
- Pass Diploma in Mechanical/Naval architecture/Electrical/Electrical & Electronics with minimum 50% marks in final year.
- Age Maximum 28 years.
- Selection Procedure: You have to apply to Top Institutes and pass their Entrance Exam. Entrance exam will include Written, psychometric test & Interview.
