Category 1 : 10th Pass with Science subjects
After passing 10th class you can join Merchant Navy in :
- Deck department as Seaman,
- OR in Engine Department as Wiper.
Both are crew category job. Department you can choose as per your choice. Before joining you have to do some courses. You can do any one of these two courses :

General Purpose Rating course ( G.P. Rating Course )
- 10th Pass with science & minimum 40 % marks.
- Minimum 40 % marks in English.
- Age : 17.5 yrs To 25 Yrs.
- It is a 6 months course.
- Fees 2 Lakh Rs.

STCW Course
- 10th Pass
- Age : 17.5 To 35 Yrs
- 15 Days Course
- Fees 15,000 Rs.
- Very difficult to get a job after this course.
Category 2 : 10th Pass without Science subjects

After completing any of the above courses you will be issued a document called C.D.C. by the Government of India. This document is required to do any job on Merchant Navy ships. After getting CDC you can join Merchant Navy ship as Trainee Seaman if you want to join in Deck Department or you can join as wiper if you want to join in Engine Department.
