After completing the Graduate Marine Engineer course candidate will get a job as a Junior Engineer on Merchant Navy ships. Junior Engineer is the starting rank in Merchant Navy. Over a period of 8-9 years by promotions junior engineer can become Chief Engineer of the ship, which is the Highest Rank.
After becoming Chief Engineer of the ship one can continue at that rank till the retirement. Optionally one can easily switch to office jobs which are easily available all over the world, like Hong Kong Singapore Dubai Australia United Kingdom etc.

Ranks and Salaries on Ships

  1. Junior Engineer – Approximately 500 to 1000 USD
  2. Fourth Engineer – Approximately 2000 to 3000 USD
  3. Third Engineer – Approximately 3500 to 5000 USD
  4. Second Engineer – Approximately 7000 to 9000 USD
  5. Chief Engineer – Approximately 9000 to 15000 USD

Eligibility criteria for GME Course

  1. Graduation in BE (Mechanical) Engineering / Naval Architecture with minimum marks of 50% in final year
  2. Must have minimum 50% marks in English language at 10th or 12th or in Degree Exam.
  3. Maximum age limit 28 years 
  4. Should be medically fit. Eye sight should not exceed 6/12

Procedure to take admission in GME course

There are many colleges which conduct Graduate Marine Engineer (GME) course. Before taking admission in a college candidate must ensure 2 very important things:
  1. The college should be approved by The Director General of Shipping. Director General of Shipping is the competent authority of Government of India to provide approval for Merchant Navy courses.
  2. Candidate should check campus placement record of the college. Always take admission in a college with 100% placement record.

To take admission in a college candidate has to contact that college and fill their form online via their website. Entrance exam will be conducted by the college to shortlist the candidates. All the entrance exams are online and Computer Based. Entrance exams are in 3 steps:

  3. Interview
